“We are making photographs to understand what our lives mean to us.”
This quote struck a chord with me as I was culling, editing, and reliving Nikki & Matt’s Our Lady of Sorrows and Grand Hall Wedding Reception (over and over and over again) from this past fall. While the quote by Ralph Hattersly might seem to reflect on making photographs of our own lives, I honestly believe being invited into other people’s lives for these occasions even help me discover and understand what my own life means. As I look through the images and constantly discover little easter eggs from wedding days that give the viewer a glimpse into such a special collection of moments, I find my mind wandering. Those special moments may not be like any other from mine or my other clients’ weddings, they bring a sense of love and peace, and make me eternally grateful for both my own relationships as well as for my clients who trust me to document theirs.
It’s so easy to get caught up in everyday life in our little worlds, but by creating these photographs, I can only hope when my client’s look back at their day, it will flood their hearts and minds with that same love and excitement they experienced on that day, and if ever in doubt, will again understand what it’s all about.
