breaking bad + one way I’m exactly like my mother

First…Breaking Bad has probably been the greatest television series ever written.  Seriously, if you haven’t checked it out, do it NOW.  I’ll admit that the first time I tried to watch the pilot, I quickly dismissed it.  It seemed goofy and I just wasn’t into it.  I don’t remember what made me try it again (maybe enough RAVES from my friends), but I did, and like most, became quickly addicted to it.

Needless to say, I’m pretty devastated that it’s over.  The ending was perfectly timed.  If they would have gone any longer, it could have had the potential to go TOO far, much like Dexter and other shows that overstayed their welcome.  (Don’t get me wrong, Dexter was AMAZING, for the first 4 seasons…)

To celebrate the occasion, I invited my brother and his girlfriend over for the finale episode on Sunday.  Of course, I had to REALLY make a party of it, even though it was only a party of three. :)

My mother is known for her parties, and especially theme parties.  She loves hosting parties, cooking, and I suppose this is what trait she has bestowed upon me, as I felt the urge to make this “Blue Sky” cake for our little finale get together, as well as some blue hawaiian punch.  A little overboard?  Never.  This is just what we do.

Started out with a Duncan Heines white box cake.  Mixed it up per the directions, and instead of one cup of water, I put in 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup milk.  I also ADDED a small package of instant vanilla pudding mix.  After mixing, I poured 2/3 of the batter into two round cake pans and then kept the rest for the “blue” swirl.  I purchased some simple liquid food coloring at the grocery store and mixed it in to the remainder of the batter, then poured it on top of the uncolored batter, then swirled it around.  Cooked both per directions on the box; I think it ended up being about 30 minutes.

I’m never ever satisfied with my frosting, so I opted to visit HyVee to see if they would sell me some of their amazing white frosting.  They did, so I simply used it to frost the cake, followed by painstakingly cutting up several blue Jelly Beans for the “meth” looking crystals on top.  (No…I’m not glorifying meth…don’t go there…just watch the show.)

Here are some of the images from my creation!
