abandoned – lawrence, kansas

who doesn’t love a good mystery?

on a recent photo shoot, my clients and I happened upon a place I literally have only visited in my dreams.  I’ve always been a risk taker and lover of mysteries, abandoned places, and ghost stories.  unfortunately, with today’s technology and easy mobility, “abandoned” places are no longer as mysterious as they once were.  until now.

this home, which by my calculations hasn’t been inhabited since the early 1990’s, was the spitting image of a tornado-ravaged home, completely abandoned by it’s previous tenants.  the windows were blown out, the walls were torn up, and random personal items littered the front lawn and swimming pool outside.

unlike other picked over abandoned places, this home was still full of a young families belongings; clothes, toys, bathroom toiletries, furniture, even medicine and old doctor transcripts.  amazing, and creepy.  personally, the most fascinating items left were the photo albums.

It gave me peek into this families previous life, and how could my imagination not run rampant with hundreds of questions.  why did these people seemingly just get up and leave?  why would they leave precious items behind…photos, children’s drawings, and private transcripts?   I’d love to be able to contact this family and ask them these questions, but if they left behind their beloved treasures in the first place, do they even want the memories?

I tread lightly in the home, but documented my tour as much as I could.  denver was quite worried about my going in alone, but I’ll never be able to squash my adventurer tendencies, and this is totally why.

    Hi Melissa,

Your photographs are amazing! I live in Lawrence so they really touched home for me. I’m writing because I’m a local explorer and amateur video-grapher and would love to see if there is a way for me to explore the home. Would it be possible to get permission? You can view my YouTube channel to confirm that this is all artistic for me and I never take anything from properties I explore but video and never leave anything but footprints. We respect the homes and are just trying to preserve these beautiful historic time capsules. Please let me know if there is a way that I could do a walk-thru assuming the building is still standing.
    Thanks so much.

    Hi Melissa,
My name is Abby, I’m a Lawrence, Kansas local and also a young photographer. I have been trying to find anything that had a story and looked abandoned to be able to take pictures there. If you wouldn’t mind emailing me this address, if the house is still abandoned, that would be amazing!
    Thank you!
